Vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) regulates more than 50 genes in various tissues of the body. Being fat-soluble, it can access regions that water-soluble antioxidants, such as vitamin C, cannot reach, such as the heart, brain, breasts, prostate, pancreas and liver. It fulfills multiple functions, among them: maintaining the balance of calcium in the tissues, favoring cell differentiation, enhancing immunity, helping in insulin secretion and regulating blood pressure. Currently, more than 90% of the population presents vitamin D deficiency, which is associated with numerous diseases, including bone conditions, autoimmune disorders and cancer. A blood concentration of 30 ng/ml is usually related to disease states.
